***HEALTH ADVISORY***
Dear Clients,
As you may have heard, there has been an outbreak of Swine Flu H5N1 in Mexico. There have been quite a few ill people and a number of deaths. So far, there have been 7 cases in California, 2 cases in Kansas, 8 cases in New York, 1 case in Ohio and 2 cases in Texas1.
This message is to let you know that routine precautions, as with any flu concern are being recommended for people in affected areas or possibly traveling to or from these areas. In addition, though not officially confirmed, airports in Mexico are screening passengers for any symptoms of the disease and not allowing any such identified persons to travel. The military has been activated to help control any spread.
The following are some helpful tips:
1) Signs and symptoms are typical of any viral infection:
2) If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and you have traveled to affected areas or have been in contact with individuals from affected areas, you should immediately report to a doctor and indicate your history of travel or contact with sick individuals
3) Precautions to take to avoid the infection are prudent hygiene measures:
a. Rigorous hand washing after touching surfaces.
b. Avoid close hugging and kissing during greeting.
c. Avoid close contact with anyone who is coughing or appears ill with the above
symptoms and similarly, cover and contain your cough and sneezing.
4) Passengers should expect to be screened at certain Mexican airports for the above symptoms and history of ill contacts and will not be permitted to board if they are considered contagious. It is important to be completely honest in disclosing this information to prevent further spread.
5) If asked about flu vaccination: the last season's flu vaccination is not considered protective against this virus. However, it was previously recommended that everyone be vaccinated against influenza as a matter of course. Please consult your doctor as to whether a flu shot is indicated for you.
