Health alerts: Meningococcemia infection reported India

Status: High risk. Six deaths and 43 cases of meningococcemia have been reported Delhi so far in 2008. Delhis health department said that 28 cases were reported in January and 15 new cases were identified in February. Precautionary medicines are being given to local people to avoid any new cases. More cases are received from congested areas and from regions where there is lack of hygiene. Things might worsen in the next two months if proper precautions are not taken. People should be aware of the symptoms and consequence of the disease. Meningococcemia is a severe bacterial infection in the blood stream. The symptom includes fever, severe headache, stiff neck and nausea. The disease can cause death in less than 12 hours after infecting the patient.
